February 27, 2005
One of the recurring themes of my op ed pieces over the past eight years has been the failures of the House leadership. Thanks to our new Speaker, Sal DiMasi, I have a new challenge: After years as one of the more outspoken leaders of the loyal opposition to Speaker Thomas Finneran, I am part of Speaker Sal DiMasi's leadership team. He appointed me to chair the Committee on Public Service which has jurisdiction for all bills, laws and regulations dealing with all people employed by or contracting with the Commonwealth. The Committee has the distinction of being one of the busiest in the legislature, hearing nearly 1,000 of the approximately 6,000 bills filed each session. In addition, the chairmanship, besides making me a member of the Speaker's inner team, gives me the bully pulpit to speak out on the importance and value of public service and public servants, and on what I regard as the awesome opportunities those of us in public life have and the sacred trust and awesome responsibilities we assume.
I am both honored and challenged by my new position, and look forward to sharing my reflections with you as I move into this new phase of my legislative career.
I also deeply appreciate all the calls, emails and letters expressing congratulations and good wishes on my appointment, and, even more, the offers of help in my new role. Thank you so very much.
Warmly, Jay |
