“School’s In: A Conversation with UMASS President Marty Meehan”
Representative Jay Kaufman’s award winning public policy forum, “OPEN HOUSE,” examines the state of higher education in Massachusetts with UMASS President Marty Meehan in “School’s In: A Conversation with UMASS President Marty Meehan”. The forum, the sixth of the 22nd season, will be held Thursday February 16th, from 7:00PM-8:00PM at the historic Depot in Lexington Center (13 Depot Square in Lexington Center).
Marty Meehan was elected President of the University of Massachusetts (UMASS) in November of 2015. He is the 27th president and first undergraduate alumnus to lead the five-campus system. UMASS boasts campuses in Amherst, Boston, Lowell, Dartmouth, and UMASS Medical in Worcester.
Under Meehan’s leadership, the UMass system has experienced outstanding growth and academic achievement. In 2016, the University set records in enrollment, research expenditures, and financial aid funding. In addition, the UMass School of Law earned full accreditation from the American Bar Association and UMass became the first public university system in the nation to divest from fossil fuel investments.
Previously, President Meehan was the chancellor of his alma mater, UMASS-Lowell, for eight years. There, he led the university to top-tier national status greatly improving enrollment, student success, fundraising and auxiliary revenue generation. Before that, he was the US Congressman from Lowell for 14 years, where he served on the House Armed Services and Judiciary committees.
How much does it cost to send a kid to college? What’s to be done about student debt? Can public universities really compete against private institutions? How are UMASS students and faculty affected by the Trump administration’s immigration orders? Don’t miss this forum February 16th, from 7PM-8PM. As always, the forum will take its shape largely from questions from the audience. Questions can also be submitted in advance by email, firstname.lastname@example.org, or tweet your questions to @repjaykaufman.
In 1997, OPEN HOUSE was awarded the prestigious Beacon Award, cable television’s equivalent of an Emmy. The series was also named the best television series by Massachusetts Cable Television Commission. The OPEN HOUSE series is produced through a partnership between Representative Kaufman and LexMedia which records the forums for broadcast in Lexington and Woburn.
